“ …Abraham stood yet before the Lord.  And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?  Peradventure there be fifty righteous within [Sodom and Gomorrah]: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?  That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”  (Genesis 18:22-25)

Abraham was pressing God to not destroy the city:

“And [Abraham] said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.  And the Lord went His way, as soon as He had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.”  (Genesis 18:32-33)

As we know, God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, meaning that there were not ten righteous men there.  How many righteous men reside in America?  Will our citizens reject the principles and values of their Creator God by their choice of a Presidential candidate?  Will God judge us as a nation worth saving?  Will we choose a man with the spirit of Esau, or a woman to rule over our demise?

“As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them.  O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.”  (Isaiah 3:12)

America is treading over a well worn path.  When God was their king, our Israelitish ancestors made the same mistake we are making today.

“…You said unto me, Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the Lord your God was your King…  But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.  And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.”  (1Samuel 12:12, 1Samuel 8:6-7)

Israel chose tall Saul to be their king instead of God.  God had clearly warned them of the terrible things that would befall them if they picked a human king (1Samuel 8:11-19).

One long running trend that runs throughout the Scriptures is the continuing rivalry between Esau and Jacob/Israel.  Esau was called Edom because of his redness (Genesis 25:30).  Esau had a contentious spirit of conflict and strife.  We saw that trend surface in the life of King Saul and David.  Saul chose those he considered to be the “best men,” to fill his cabinet positions and executive departments – and he chose Edomites.

“Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to [the Priests of] Nob, to Ahimelech [the Priest] the son of Ahitub.”  (1Samuel 22:9)

Doeg drew his sword and mercilessly killed all the priests of Nob.  That was a classic example of the Godless ferocious Edomite’s wrath.

Not every Edomite will display Esau’s traits exactly the same, but those characteristics may be discerned and placed properly into Bible prophecy.  The Bible examples show over and over how the descendents of Esau/Edom are the enemy of God’s people.

In the Book of Esther, evil Haman is another example of an Edomite who embraced and acted upon his hatred of God’s people.  And we are all familiar with Herod of Christ’s time who killed all the young boys of Bethlehem.  The Herod family was comprised of brutal and ruthless Edomites.

In today’s sermon we will take a look at Esau and his descendents, the Edomites, and how they fit into overall Biblical prophecy.
